Since oktober last year I have been part of an Instagram community called BeerBloggersDK. BeerBloggersDK are 11 Instagrammers posting about beer and all of them are from Denmark.
What we mostly post is things related to a certain hashtag. In January 2020 we wanted to do something different from the widespread “Dry January” or “White January”. We quickly agreed on a homage to black beers of all kinds – not only stouts and porters but every beer that is black or nearly black in color. To make it Instagram-friendly we used the hashtag #2020BlackJanuary for the event. In January I managed to post 23 different black beers with the best being difficult to point out. I had more than one great black beer from Belgian De Struise Brouwers with different versions of Black Albert being super tasty – Cuvée Delphine, Black Damnation XXVI – Froggie and Black Damnation II – Mocha Bomb were the best!
The best #2020BlackJanuary beer for me was Rocky Mountain Barrel-Aged T.O.R.I.S. the Tyrant Triple Oatmeal Imperial Stout by Hoppin’ Frog Brewery.
The viscosity of this beer is crazy! It’s like thick motor oil from a worn-out beat-up engine. The aroma is amazing too – it’s dark chocolate fudge, bourbon, charred oak, vanilla, molasses, and roasted malt. The taste of this beer is awesome – dark chocolate fudge brownie, bourbon, coffee, molasses, vanilla, caramel, umami, charred oak, soya sauce, and then bourbon again! Rocky Mountain Barrel-Aged T.O.R.I.S. the Tyrant Triple Oatmeal Imperial Stout is smooth like crazy and incredibly tasty. The Rocky Mountain barrels make it boozy and then not boozy at all!
Everything in this beer is just right!
It’s not B.O.R.I.S.!
It’s not D.O.R.I.S. (double B.O.R.I.S.)!!
It’s T.O.R.I.S. (triple B.O.R.I.S.) and then some!!
This big barrel-aged imperial stout is kind of old school but tasty as hell and it might possibly be the biggest, thickest and meanest imperial stout I’ve had in a long time. It might even be the meanest yet.
This beer is without a doubt what barrel-aged imperial stouts are supposed to be like – motor-oil-thick, smooth, bittersweet and downright tasty! I want more!!!
With Rocky Mountain Barrel-Aged T.O.R.I.S. the Tyrant Triple Oatmeal Imperial Stout in mind I think it’s safe to say that #2020BlackJanuary is a succes that hopefully will return in January 2021.
